Ultimate Stakeholders' Ambition
Ultimate Stakeholders' Ambition
The future the organization’s ultimate stakeholders want the organization to help make possible, looking more than ten years ahead.
Who are the ultimate stakeholders?
Within ICR, these are the people for whom the organization ultimately exists. They may be an entrepreneur or family owner, the owners or shareholders of a corporate group, or the people a public or nonprofit organization ultimately exists to serve.
It starts outside the organization itself: with what ultimately matters to those for whom the organization exists. By looking beyond ten years, the Ambition is less constrained by today’s organization, capabilities and circumstances.
The organization is not the Ambition. It is the means through which that Ambition is pursued. The Ambition therefore provides a long-term point of reference for choices about the business model, direction and development of the organization.
Why is Ultimate Stakeholders' Ambition important for organizations?
Organizations continuously make choices about their business model, priorities, investments, people and development. Without a clear understanding of the future the organization is ultimately intended to help make possible, those choices can easily become driven by current activities, short-term objectives or the limitations of the existing organization.
Making the Ultimate Stakeholders' Ambition explicit creates a long-term point of reference. It helps determine what kind of business model is needed and, subsequently, what the organization must be capable of delivering.
This changes the direction of reasoning: rather than allowing the organization you have today to determine what can be achieved tomorrow, you start with the future you want to make possible and build backwards from there.
