Six Vans and an Empty Seat

An illustrative fictional story. The characters and events are invented.

Niels is 34, a skilled heating engineer and a new father. He wants to start his own business. He has savings for a van and two building contractors ready to give him work. His wife asks what he hopes to achieve. “A good business. And more freedom for us.”

The first jobs come in. A contractor offers another project. Niels says yes. Soon he needs another engineer, then someone to manage the schedule. Every decision has a reason.

Imagine the business six years later. Six vans carry his name. On Friday afternoon, a contractor calls. A heating system has failed, and the new owners move in on Monday. His engineer is unsure what to do. The contractor wants Niels. His daughter’s school performance starts in an hour. He promised he would be there. “I’m on my way,” he tells the contractor.

That evening, his wife shows him a photo. Their daughter on stage. An empty seat beside her mother. His business has grown. His freedom has shrunk. Now go back to the day before that first job. What if Niels had explored his starting point, then described the future he wanted twelve years from now?

As the owner, he is the ultimate stakeholder whose Ambition the business must help realize. He wants financial security, time with his family and a business with lasting value that can function without him. He wants customers to enjoy comfortable homes, with heating problems detected before they become emergencies. He does not yet know how to make all of that possible. That gives him something to invent and work towards.

With Route ICR, Niels makes his Ambition explicit and turns it into requirements for his business model. With his adviser, he explores customer relationships, income and skills. Could installation, maintenance and monitoring work together? What would customers value, and what could his team reliably deliver?

He can still accept the contractor’s first job. But he also plans to develop direct customer relationships. He agrees which decisions his first employee can make and how they will share knowledge. In the ICR platform, they connect goals to actions, assign responsibility and set deadlines. They review progress, risks and what needs improving.

Each new van now raises another question: does this investment bring us closer to the future I started the business for? When his daughter steps onto the stage, Niels wants a team that can help the customer while he stays in his seat. Whether you are starting a business or have been running one for years, what future should it make possible for you and your family?
