What is a vision?
Master Your Purpose. Own Your Freedom. With ICR.
A vision outlines where you want to go, what you want to mean to your target audience, and how you plan to achieve this. Without a vision, an organization is directionless, as a vision provides direction and fosters team cohesion. It is almost certain that an organization without a vision wastes a lot of time, energy, and money. Yet, many entrepreneurs underestimate the importance of developing a vision.
For an entrepreneur, the vision represents their long-term perspective of the business. It serves as the foundation from which the company operates. It's wise to embed a challenging ambition in your vision. This is essential for improvement and innovation. Even if the ambition seems unachievable at first glance, the right approach can make it attainable!
Be critical, though, because if your ambition is to achieve substantial growth, there must be a sufficient market for what you intend to do. In other words, it must matter to enough customers. Additionally, what you plan to do must be distinctive compared to your competitors. You have already addressed this in the value propositions of the business model and the mission.
By articulating our vision, we clarify where we aim to go. Our vision also indicates the market position we intend to achieve within three to five years. Moreover, a strong vision can enhance employee engagement and motivation, as they can identify with the goals and understand their contribution to achieving them.
A vision provides direction and a common goal for all members of the organization. It enables the organization to set long-term goals and develop a strategy to achieve these goals. Additionally, a clear vision acts as a compass, facilitating decision-making and aligning all activities with the achievement of set goals.
Together with the mission and core values, a vision forms the foundation for an organization's success and growth.
Steps to Develop a Strong Vision:
1. Inventory of current resources
- the responsible person inventories what is already available and records it in the vision input field within ICR
- what ambitions exist within the organization
- outcomes of any previous attempts to develop a strong vision
- elements that are important and, for example, documented in research reports, annual reports, or (strategic) plans
- similar texts from competitors and other relevant organizations
2. Share inventory results with your (core) team
- share the results of step 1 with your organization’s core team via the share with your team function under the vision input field within ICR
- discuss which elements must definitely be included in the vision
- record these in the vision input field within ICR
- formulate a draft vision and formally request feedback from the core team via the share with your team function
3. Ensure organizational buy-in
- If the core team is satisfied with the draft vision, request feedback from a larger group of employees from all levels and departments
- based on the feedback, the core team finalizes the vision description
- request feedback one more time from the previously involved employees to ensure that the latest feedback and corresponding score are stored within ICR
- core team members ensure everyone understands what the vision means for their daily work
